It all began in 2003 with a tiny, pocket-sized device designed to tackle the cigarette crisis. Little did anyone know, this sleek invention would ignite a vaping revolution, and before specialists were able to research and state their opinions about the modern day cigarette,, the hallways were already filled with the lingering scent of blueberry blast.

Today, 1 in 20 Americans vape weekly, and out of this group, nearly 1 in 10 of them are under 24, these numbers are a staggering 21% in 2018 alone. These numbers tell a striking story of youthful influence in our society,  and now, in 2024, there is no stopping the pandemic of e cigarettes, leading to the unfortunate truth,

We are the lab rats.

The Why

To be rewarded is the action of being given a positive in exchange for a good deed or sacrifice one must have made. And unfortunately, For many teens, the promise of a quick high from vaping overpowers the common sense voice that says, “Stop, you’re harming yourself.”

In a brief explanation , Nicotine affects the ion channel receptor, causing it to open, as charged ions move through the receptor and the charge distribution across the membrane is altered. The result you may ask? A releasing the feeling of excitement, and an irresistible want for more.

But all of us have read an article, seen an ad, or been involved in a discussion around getting help when your mental state is low, and staying away from addictive substances as a way to escape.

But if the topic is so widely talked about, then why are teens still turning to jules as a way to relieve the stress of everyday activities such as school, relationships, and the stress of academic excellence.

The answer is simple, and can be related to many, even those not turning to nicotine as a way to cope,

Asking for help is scary, but truing to a non speaking  vessel of calm is easy, and opens a channel to a cycle of a “vape therapy” session, seemingly free of stress, pressure and human interaction other than the cashier at the tobacco store.

And of course, with the added bonus of avoiding the direct confrontation, or utter the words “i need help”

In other circumstances, vaping can be discovered in means of fitting in, where with limited social interaction may turn to the “hit” to release nervous energy, or be more sociable and have something to relate to when discussing interest in the school bathroom.

But now that we have discussed the why, let’s discuss the how.

“how is your life falling apart after the first hit”

Vaping is an full blow agonist in the brain , meaning hormones released by the vape mimics natural chemicals of the brain, causing deregulation of neurocircuit, aka, false domaine reactive over exciting, which has been studied to effect control attention, i pulse, mood, and other key features prominent in  developing in teen years. From the little research of long term effect if vaping, surveys have relieved that vaping is leading to metal blocks in maturity when older related to the ideas disclosed above, along with Research from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has shown that teens who start vaping before age 14 are more likely to experience cognitive impairments, such as mental fog and other mind impairments such as lower reported levels of dopamine reported in almost all of post long term vape victims.

In case I haven’t scared you enough, a study done In April 2019, CNBC reported that the FDA launched an investigation into dozens of seizures linked to e-cigarette use, a concerning trend that grew to 127 cases by August of cases related to peers not diagnosed before an active addiction.

your brain is more malleable than ever in adolescent, and an available addiction such as the vape is destroying the mind of future generations,

We really don’t know the long term dangers, yet, since vaping hasn’t been around for long enough to do multiple repeated studies on the topics discussed above.

But with that, The day will come when we have a clearer picture of the long-term effects of vaping, but Until then,

We are the lab rats.

Help is here.
